The Songs

Yiddish (from 'Strings Attached') by Estee Stimler (Lyrics) & Yuval Havkin (Music)

Strings Attached is a musical comedy about parents whose dreams of an empty nest collapse when their adult children begin moving back home one by one - along with meddling Yiddish-speaking grandparents, one daughter’s messy break-up, another daughter’s pregnancy complications, one son’s secret cannabis garden,  and another son who still monitors the house through hidden cameras from university. Amid the chaos, the couple ultimately realise they would not change their messy family for the world.

About the song: This song from Strings Attached takes place during a Friday night dinner in which the Yiddish-speaking grandparents accidentally ingest marijuana edibles and teach Yiddish to a very enthusiastic non-Jewish couple.

Shellac (from 'The Dybbuk') by Joe Leather (Lyrics) & Isaac Adni (Music)

It’s 1969 in Prestwich, Manchester: a tight-knit Jewish community wrestling with modernity. Leah’s wedding day approaches and all she wants to do is honour her family and do what’s expected. But when her free-spirited friend Sarah drags her out for a night on the town, Leah meets Daniel - a musician, a misfit… and soon, a ghost. When Daniel returns on her wedding day and possesses her, Leah is thrust into a battle for her own future. Urged on by the watchful spirits of her ancestors, she must finally decide... follow tradition, surrender to a love that refuses to die, or choose a life that is entirely her own.

About the song: Shellac comes midway through Act 1, immediately after an explosive argument between Leah and her father Jacob. Leah has been caught sneaking back into the house after a night out at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester. What started as one last taste of freedom before her wedding quickly turns into a confrontation; Jacob feels betrayed and humiliated, Leah feels suffocated and controlled. She storms upstairs, leaving Jacob furious but shaken, pacing round the kitchen. In the charged silence that follows, Leah’s paternal grandmother, BUBBE appears. She finds her son clinging to his anger, and steps in, reminding him of the follies of his own youth.

Get it Wrong (from 'Ringo') by Yaron Edelstein (Lyrics) & Alon Glesinger (Music)

Ringo is a surreal and dark Israeli musical-comedy about love, identity, war, and masculinity. The story follows Danny, whose penis mysteriously detaches from his body, becomes an independent man named Ringo, and eventually turns into a national celebrity and political symbol. Blending absurd humour with sharp social satire, the show explores relationships, freedom, and Israeli society through a wildly imaginative plot.

About the song: Get It Wrong is a song about embracing mistakes and uncertainty in life and love. Mika’s grandmother encourages her not to fear making the “wrong” choice, because our mistakes and unexpected decisions are often what shape who we become.
