General information:
JEWSicals 2025 is a vibrant showcase of brand-new musical theatre pieces, each at a different stage of development. Every selected work will present a snippet of up to 10 minutes, offering a unique glimpse into its creative journey. The full evening will run approximately 90 minutes.

Ensemble/Additional Work
The evening features multiple excerpts of brand-new musicals. In addition to the role you're cast for - the performer will collaborate with several writing teams and appear in supporting/ensemble roles in other pieces.
Recording/Footage
The showcase will be professionally filmed and recorded. All participating performers will receive copies of their material for personal portfolios/showreels.

Paper Flowers
A modern story of love, obsession, and imagination — Paper Flowers tells of Alex, who builds an entire romance from words, only to discover how fragile dreams can be when they try to live in the real world.

Alex (late 20s–early 30s, male) – a contemporary MT lyrical tenor. One of two leads in PAPER FLOWERS, A modern story of gay love, obsession, and imagination — Paper Flowers tells of Alex who builds an entire romance from words, only to discover how fragile dreams can be when they try to live in the real world.

Mum Thumb
A heartwarming piece inspired by the lived experiences of the playwright and her mother. As their relationship shifts to incorporate vascular dementia, they are nourished by music, memories and their Jewish heritage. ‘Mum Thumb’ reveals how, through all the changes of life, and even after its end, we can be warmed and connected by love.

Role
Anne, (70s, Female) ideally an older Jewish actor- deep, funny, and eccentric. As dementia progresses, she loses inhibitions and conventional language but remains a powerful, expressive communicator, full of warmth and wit.

A musical inspired by the life and art of Frida Kahlo. The show creates a dialogue between music and Kahlo’s self-portraits, and reflects on what it means to be a woman. Themes of the show include: pain, loss, desire, identity, and resilience.

Role
Sarah, (43–55, Female) - A sharp, energetic woman who is outspoken and opinionated, with a strong sense of control and standards. Beneath her endless focus on appearance, weight, and anything that strays from “normal,” lies a deep self-criticism she cannot fully see or resolve. Her actions and words are colored by the limitations of her generation, creating both tension and unintended vulnerability in her interactions with Abi.

Jacob, (45–60, Male) - A loving but weary man, devoted to Sarah yet unable to keep up with her endless chatter. He maintains a quiet distance, separating her nosiness and worries from the simple life he wishes to lead. Repeated rejection has made him reserved and self-conscious, holding onto the memory of their youthful love while navigating the subtle strains of a long marriage
